EHA organizes Educational Encounter on the occasion of IPHE meeting
The EHA in collaboration with the Spanish Hydrogen Association and HyER’s vice president Javier Brey and with the support of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells organised an Educational Encounter at the Seville School of Engineering  on November  13, 2012. The EHA seeks with these encounters to define the educational needs to ensure a sustainable roll out of commercial hydrogen and fuel cell applications in the coming decades. The Assistant director of the School of Engineering Francisco Gordilla welcomed the audience referring to hydrogen and fuel cell activities in the School and its relationships with industry in this field in Sevilla (Abengoa, etc.). Prof. Filippo Rosa explained the need to work close with industry to give students a perspective of the job possibilities; many of his students have found jobs in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector and he has the impression that the hydrogen and fuel cell courses that the School is offering actually improve the chances of students to find jobs.

Introduction
The year 2012 saw an increased interest of the role of hydrogen in Europe’s clean energy and transport policy. The approval of a large EU energy storage project (INGRID), the first hydrogen project along a TEN T corridor  (HIT) and the management of the European Electro-mobility Observatory (EEO) by HyER demonstrated the recognition of hydrogen’s role in EU ‘s emission reduction efforts.  In addition the highly anticipated EU Communication on Clean Power for Transport including a legislative proposal for the deployment of the alternative fuels infrastructure. As the FC and H2 sector is moving form a project focus to a program approach where larger number of applications need to bring down costs and engage first customers, the need for more political engagement at national and local level is crucial. The role of EHA national member associations will therefore significantly increase to align key stakeholders and communicate examples of successful national H2 mobility initiatives throughout Europe. We are looking forward to an exciting 2013 and wish you all Lovely and Relaxing Holidays and a great start of the New Year!

Dr Joachim Gretz, Pioneer of Hydrogen Energy 1929-2012
With regret we inform you of the death of our former honorary member Dr. Joachim Gretz  who died on October 12 aged 83. With him we lose a pioneer of hydrogen energy in Germany, particularly Hamburg, and Europe. He was a champion of hydrogen technology in a time when it was still widely seen as a subversive underground activity. Being a member of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra (Italy) his insider knowledge made it possible for him to launch projects about the topic at a time what it did not yet appear at all in the official research framework programs. His greatest success was without doubt the EQHHP (Euro-Québec Hydro-Hydrogen Pilot Project) which was done jointly by the Commission and the Canadian province of Québec. The results set a standard, and the community profits from them until this day.
