Commissioner Arias Cañete hosted an event at World EXPO Milan, with the participation of Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney, which took a close look at the role of energy in the entire agri-food chain “from farm to fork”. In particular, he spoke of the potential of renewable energy and energy efficiency for the sector. Sustainable energy was in fact the main theme of the month. Earlier in the month, G7 leaders met in Bavaria to finalise an historic agreement to wean their countries off fossil fuels and pave the way for an ambitious global climate deal at COP21 in Paris later this year.

Hot on the heels of that was EU Sustainable Energy Week with a packed agenda of conferences, workshops and awards. The week was kicked off by Commissioner Arias Cañete presenting our latest renewable energy progress report. With a renewable energy sector worth over €130bn a year and more than one million jobs, and €35bn worth of exports, Europe is as good at renewables as renewables are good for Europe!
