The Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) on 26 February, 2014 issued a statement calls on the European Council to agree on an ambitious and coherent set of binding targets for 2030 for (i) greenhouse gas emissions reductions, (ii) energy efficiency and (iii) renewable energy. The related needs for grid development and system security must be carefully considered when designing supporting mechanisms and policies. “Industry and civil society have come to a common understanding of what is urgently needed now”, said Antonella Battaglini, Executive Director of RGI.“Grid development is a long-term exercise”, said Boris Schucht, CEO of 50Hertz. This is the first time that transmission system operators across Europe express an opinion about energy sources, in a constructive and open way. This statement, together with the European Grid Declarations, sets the base for a constructive cooperation between TSOs and NGOs to build necessary grids in time and without harming nature and therefore contribute to the transformation of the power sector and to mitigating climate change.
