The UK Department for Transport (DFT), is considering to deploy hydrogen-powered trains.
DFT is trying to accommodate rising passenger demands on non-electrified routes. More than half of the network in the country is not electrified and operated by high-emission diesel trains. Fuel cell powered trains could be thus an elegant solution for the routes where the electrification would be economically unsustainable.
Fourteen zero-emission H2 trains will already operate soon in Lower Saxony, Germany.
