When: 16 November, 2015

On the 16th of November 2015, students from Delft University of Technology will attempt to beat the electric lap record on the circuit of Zandvoort. The lap record is currently held by a Tesla and was set in 2012. The Formula Zero team believes their car is able to beat this record with their innovative fuel cell technology. With this race car the team aims at educating the general public about the possibilities of fuel cell technology.

 Electric lap record

The circuit of Zandvoort is known to be the epicenter of racing in the Netherlands. In October 2012 a Tesla Roadster set the current lap record for electric vehicles (2.10,90). Based on our calculations we think we can beat this record with our improved and optimized Forze VI. Recent test sessions have shown that the car is indeed ready to take on this challenge. The Forze VI is a hydrogen-electric race car: the drivetrain is electric, but the car generates the power on its own, with hydrogen and oxygen in a PEM fuel cell. The big advantage of hydrogen is that it can be refueled like gasoline, in contrast to batteries that have to be recharged.

Date: November 16th from 10:00 until 13:00

Location: Circuit Zandvoort, Burgemeester van Alphenstraat 108, Zandvoort

Planning of event

10:00 – 10:15 – Presentation for the press

10:15 – 11:00 – Preparation for record attempt

11:00 – 12:00 – Record attempt

12:00 – 13:00 – Photo and interview moment

Fuel cell

The fuel cell converts hydrogen into water and electricity with an efficiency of 60 percent. This electricity powers the electric motors, which have a combined power of 190 kW or 260 bhp. Full power gives the Forze VI a top speed of 210 km/h.

Nürburgring

In May 2015, the Forze VI broke the lap record for fuel cell powered cars at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 10.43. The record lap was driven by former Formula One driver Jan Lammers, who is one of Forze’s ambassadors.

Racing

Forze was founded in 2007 and is the high-tech hydrogen racing team of Delft University of Technology. The team consists of 70 students who are engaged in the development, production and implementation of hydrogen-powered racing cars, in order to combine motorsport with clean technology. The purpose of the team is to promote the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the automotive industry. In eight years, Forze has released six vehicles and achieved many successes, such as building the first hydrogen-electric racing car ever.
