On the first Day of the EU Hydrogen Week on November 20-24 2023 in Brussels, critics of Europe’s growing hydrogen import ambitions, joined the crowds at the exhibition grounds. Just after the opening session of the High Level Conference, where EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen’s speech just had been screened, pointing to the 17 billion euro of State Aid for the the first IPCEI projects and the 800 Euro mln funding for the first EU H2 Auction with 3 bln more to come in 2024, scanding “Hands of the Global South!”, a non identified group of, as it seemed, regular registered participants, took the floor at several B2B sessions. They were repeatedly escorted off the premises by security guards, leaving the audience, used to hearing the great benefits of hydrogen to a cleaner world, visibly shaken. The protesters indicated not to belong to an organisation, but to be worried about the direction hydrogen development is taking. Future Clean Transition Dialogues of which the first one was dedicated to the Hydrogen last October 2023 better expand their invitation lists…..
