During the EU Sustainable Energy Week a EHA, HyER (formerly HyRaMP), Fuel Cell Europe, and New IG collaboratively held the public workshop “Fuel cells and hydrogen within the European Initiative on Smart Cities.”  at the Palais des Académies, Rue Ducale 1, Brussels 1000.

The workshop showcased existing fuel cell and hydrogen technologies solutions in different cities throughout Europe and the latest developments for buildings, energy networks and transport. It also gave participants the opportunity to get in touch with key players and innovators in the field.

The event was concluded with a panel discussion which on the Vision, potential and scope for FCH technologies in the EU Initiative on Smart Cities. Within the panel discussion, Joost Van Iersel, Member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) stressed the importance of developing concrete ideas that engage cities in implementing hydrogen technologies on a larger scale as the EU 2020 strategy acknowledges a larger role of cities in achieving the Lisbon Strategy objectives.

Peter Daw, Greater London Authority, Policy & Programmes Manager for Climate Change Mitigation & Air Quality (UK), explained the role of hydrogen technologies in achieving GLA climate change and air quality objectives, while indicating the role of smart procurement where suppliers are being asked to comply with new environmental requirements.

Adwin Martens ,Executive Director, Waterstofnet (Flanders, Belgium), outlined the activities of WaterstofNet a regional programme in the region of Flanders and South Netherlands that seeks to leverage the expertise of local companies in several hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

Andreras Ziolek, Chair of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Electromobility in European Regions, HyER (formerly HyRaMP) (North Rein Westphalia, Germany), stressed role of regions and cities in introducing renewable energy in local energy systems and the important role of clean hydrogen technologies in public transport, in buildings, energy storage and smart grids.
