EHA in cooperation with the UNFCCC Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). of which EHA is the first hydrogen partner, and the new Brazilian Hydorgen Association organized a workshop at the WHEC on Global Actions Using Renewable Sources for Hydrogen Production.

Brazilian Ministry climate change coordinator Marcio Rojas reported Brazilian ambitions  37% CO2 reduction 20205 compared to 2005 and 43% by 2030 , non hydro renewable 23% by 2030 and 6 Gtons CO2 per capita by 2030. Brazilain government in cooperation with GEF is working on an analysis of key sectors to mitigate climate change: households, industry,  financial sector, transport  agricultural and waste.

Itaipu, Antonio Carlos Fonseca Santos works superintendant, 81% of electricity in Brazil is produced by renewables. Energy cooperation between Brazil and Paraguy: Itaipu produces more energy that has to be channelled away sometimes. 97% of hydro potential is used even in years of drought.

BASE Sustainable Energy, Demostenes Barbisa Silva talked about the first experiences with H2 in Brazil starting 44 years ago. As in California where 200MW in less than 1 min needs to be dispatched, Brazil needs to  dispatch 80MW in less than 15MW.  Brazil has 142GW  installed capacity and over 134.oo km of electricity net. Gas pipelines exist only partly in the West of Brazil. BASE estimates that 50.4 GW /year between 2021 and 2026 of excess electricity is produced and only hydrogen is the only technology compatible to TWH of necesssary storageb. BASE propose a regional strategy for PtG roll out. H2 capacity of  2.7 mln Nm3/year,  equivalent to 15GW year  potential taking out 0.1Gton CO2 per year.

Pedro Bentancourt, on behalf National Brazil Association of Automakers, ANFAVEA, Brazilain vehicle production is 9th in the world, 65 industrial plants , 1.3 mln employment, 23 % of industrial GDP. Production in 2000, 1.16 mln units to  2.7 mln vehicles  in 2017. China is producing 30 mln units, Brazil is 9th producer. Electric and hybride vehicles sold in China totalled 350.000 in 2016 because of government support in tax reduction and other incentives in Brazil 3.296, 157 pure electric only.,,, but ethanol can help FCEV roll out as ethanol is rich in H2 and a national technology.

Silvano Pozzi, Ballard Power Systems, feasibility studies for fuel cells in transport applications. Air pollution costs EU 1.5 trillion euro a year., energy production is responsible for 60% as in Brazil. FC buses are flexible and weight 2000 kg less than battery powered buses. It is becoming affordable: 600K by 2020.
