Frithjof KUBLIK, Senior Consultant Business Development presented Shell’s green hydorgen ambition at the EU Sustainable Enery Week in Brussels on June 7, 2018.  Shell Deutschland Oil GMBH is currentlly building what will become the world’s largest hydrogen electrolysis plant at the 140,000-b/d refinery at Wesseling, Germany, which together with the former Godorf refinery near Cologne-Godorf, form its 325,000-b/d or 27 mln tons per year integrated Rheinland refinery, Germany’s largest. With a peak capacity of 10 Mw, the proposed electricity plant will use electricity rather than natural gas to produce hydrogen to be used for processing and upgrading of products at the refinery’s Wesseling site as well as testing the technology and exploring application in other sectors, Shell said. The plant will produce the 180.ooo ton H2 ton per year, the amount what an average refinery needs. With Shell and its European partner consortium of ITM Power PLC, SINTEF Industry, thinkstep AG, and Element Energy already having secured €10 million in funding from the European Union’s Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaking for the project, Shell said it will now begin detailed technical planning and approvals for the new plant. Total project investment, including integration into the refinery, will be about €20 million.

Mr. Kublik referred to the need that hydrogen as an intermediate in refieneries is counted in the Renewabel Eenrgy Direcitve , that  of green hydorgen should be abel to be produced from all green eletricity and not only  fully renewable by sourcing rnewable slectricty Power Purchase Agreements
