Following the example of the European Electromobility Observatory, EEO,  the European Commission has launched a website providing specialised data and relevant information on alternative transport fuels for each Member State. The European Alternative Fuels Observatory was created to support the development of alternative transport fuels in Europe and assist member states with the implementation of Directive 2014/94/EU on the deployment of recharging and refuelling stations. The Directive requires that member states ensure a minimum coverage of certain alternative fuels by the end of 2020, 2025 or 2030. The coverage of a certain number of hydrogen stations however is not mandatory >each Member State can decide to include hydrogen in their alternative fuel planning.
Until now data on alternative fuels has been fragmented and not checked for quality. The EAFO gathers all existing data, and performs necessary quality checks and cross-checks to ensure that the data is reliable. The team behind the observatory will also perform regular research and analysis of the data to provide recommendations to policy-makers.The EAFO relies on the direct input of data from European countries and stakeholders. People and entities holding additional data and information are cordially invited to share it with the EAFO for the benefit of all.The EAFO is also putting together a pilot group of 20 cities, who will develop a city-specific factsheet for the deployment of alternative transport fuels, which will be ready this summer.
