The City of Perugia is the project leader of “H2 Power Hydrogen in Fuel Gas” project co-financed by the European Union under the Life EU program. The project sees the participation of APM (the local public transport company) and Egenera (Perugia company that deals with generating and saving energy).
On January 31, 2011 the Councillor for Mobility Roberto Ciccone, the EU representative of the H2Power monitoring external group Yael Meroz, the project  coordinator Leonardo Naldini, the president of Umbria Tpl (Umbrian company of local public transport – APM) Giovanni Moriconi, the engineers Burri and Confidati of  Egenera srl e I&TC srl and Dr. Spada of Tamat Ong presented the project.
The total value of the project is  € 1,440,205, of which 633.000 are funded by the European Commission. € 95 thousand, financed mainly (70 thousand euro) by the City of Perugia are the activities cost related to the project, which will last thirty-eight months.
The project has the objective of verifying and demonstrating a sustainable technical alternative to urban mobility, using alternative fuels to the traditional ones: hydrogen from renewable sources. The proposed methodology foresees the preparation and development of a hydrogen methane fuelled city bus using a methane-fuelled bus.
Technical Objectives are:
  • attesting and verifying the feasibility of hydrogen-methane fuel on small public transport vehicles, in urban and extra-urban areas with a high degree of orographic complexity.
  • preparing and developing a demonstrator, consisting of a public transport vehicle provided with an hydrogen-methane fuel kit.
Strategic and Political objectives are:
  • Cleaner transport for a good quality air – To deliver and evaluate improvements in the efficiency and environmental performance of the mobility system.
  • Innovation – To progressively create a local public transport fleet made up of ecocompatible vehicles and supporting researches, meetings and agreements with other local authorities.
  • Integration – To ensure the added value of each implemented activity through an integrated approach of the relevant city actors (policy makers, transport agencies, and the citizens) so to predict the potential impacts of implementing similar measures elsewhere in Europe.
  • European policy relevance – To ensure that the project findings and outputs are applicable to the European strategies and policies for sustainable urban mobility directly applicable to the needs and priorities of transport policy makers.

In particular it will be realized ​​a vehicle, a mini bus demonstrator with a hydrogen-methane fuel with which it will possible to test and verify all devices. Following a private test track, the demonstrator will be used in the city and checked over a distance of 10 to 15,000 Km. Finally the system with hydrogen-methane fuel can be applied to the existing fleet.
