Hydrogen corridor planned in Scotland

Published on: September 16, 2009

The ‘Scotland’s Hydrogen Future’, which includes  a newly unveiled plan for a ‘hydrogen corridor’ from Aberdeen to Inverness has been discussed during the conference on ‘Building a Sustainable Economy through Hydrogen and Renewable Energy ‘organized by the Moray-based United Nations Training Centre, the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, and the Royal Mail.

“The prospect of a ‘Hydrogen Corridor’ between Aberdeen and Inverness is an exciting first for Scotland and the UK. The creation of an infrastructure to refuel road vehicles with hydrogen means that there will be a realistic alternative to petrol and diesel. “I am pleased that the Royal Mail Group is a strong supporter of this project and that the UN Training Centre in Moray is playing such a positive role in developing leading global standards here in Scotland.” said Moray MP and Westminster SNP Group Leader Angus Robertson during the conference.

The ‘Scottish Hydrogen Corridor’ is expected to run along a 150-mile stretch of road from Aberdeen to Inverness, via Findhorn in Moray. This highway will employ a diversity of renewable energy solutions in different locations with hydrogen refueling stations placed at strategic locations along the route to service a range of users including public transport providers, local authority vehicles, Royal Mail vans and ultimately private car users. This will include at least 3 hydrogen refueling stations to service, in the first instance, fleet and public transport operators in a public/private partnership.

Hydrogenics Wins Electrolyser Contract for Netherlands Hydrogen Station

Hydrogenics Corporation has announced a contract with Ballast Nedam IPM, awarded at the end of 2011, to supply a HySTAT®30 electrolyser for a Netherlands-based hydrogen fuelling station. The station owner will be WaterstofNet, a non-profit organisation financed by the Flemish and Dutch governments. The electrolyser, which is capable of producing up to 65 kilograms per day of pure hydrogen, is anticipated to be delivered in mid-2012 and be operational by the end of the year. Hydrogenics’ HySTAT electrolyser products have been used in over 35 hydrogen fuelling installations worldwide. This is the fourth hydrogen fuelling station contract awarded to Hydrogenics in 2011. Hydrogenics has also acknowledged the valuable role WaterstofNet plays in the Dutch/Flemish region, where it has for a number of years provided strong leadership in promoting hydrogen technology development and deploying hydrogen solutions. Ballast Nedam IPM specialises in the design and construction of filling stations and plays a leading role in developing refuelling stations for alternative fuels. Source: FuelCellToday
