Hydrogen Hits the Roads

Hydrogen Student Design Contest 2012

Published on: September 27, 2011

Registration to the annual Hydrogen Student Design Contest, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, is now open for the year 2012. Whereas the deadline for registrations is 1 November 2011 the theme of this year’s contest is recently announced as combined heat, hydrogen and power. The contestants are challenged to design a tri-generation system that produces heat, hydrogen and power for a university campus by utilising local resources.

The 2012 Contest will challenge university-level students to plan and design a residential hydrogen fueling system. As a part of their entry, teams will develop a technical design; conduct an economic analysis; and develop business, marketing, and public education plans for their systems.

FuelCellToday reports that last year, the Contest attracted 47 teams from 17 countries and five continents, including seven teams from the top 20 engineering schools in the U.S. In addition to the U.S. Department of Energy, this year’s Contest is supported by the International Association for Hydrogen Energy (IAHE) which will publish the winning entries in a scientific journal, and the World Hydrogen Energy Conference 2012 (WHEC2012) with an expenses-paid trip.

More information on the Contest, official rules and guidelines are available on the website.

Hyundai to provide FCEV for Oslo’s public fleets and taxi firms

Hyundai  signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norwegian firm Hydrogen Operation, (HYOP) in Seoul on May 15, 2012,  to support Oslo’s pilot project to provide FCEVs for public agencies, commercial fleets and taxi firms. HYOP plans to build additional hydrogen refuelling stations in accordance with the rollout of the vehicles. In early 2011, Hyundai signed an MoU with representatives from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland under which Hyundai would provide FCEVs for demonstration and the countries would continue to develop the necessary refuelling infrastructure. These efforts are progressing well. In May 2011, Hyundai test-drove its FCEVs in cities such as Stockholm and Oslo. In Denmark, the Hyundai Tucson ix35 FCEVs crossed the country from east to west (about 340 km) on one tank of hydrogen, in cooperation with local hydrogen station operator H2 Logic. Prior to the test drive, Hyundai entered into a partnership with H2 Logic and vehicle distributor Hydrogen Link. In November 2011, Hyundai joined the H2moves Scandinavia project, collaborating in the official opening of the project’s hydrogen station in Oslo. In April this year, Norway’s Zero Emission Resource Organization (ZERO) drove two Hyundai ix-35 FCEVs from Oslo to Monte Carlo, which was accomplished with only five refuelling stops using already-established hydrogen [...]

Hannover Fair FCEV Drive and Ride refuelled by green hydrogen

The FCEV and EV Drive and Ride at the Hannover Fair is a big success: long lines, even in the rain, are forming the first days of the fair for test drives . The Fair with more than 5.000 exhibitors, over half foreign, has seen an increase of exhibitors of 8%.  ”Greenintelligence” has been the fair’s theme over recent years and the clean energy and clean transport showcases are also this year very prominent. The Drive and Ride includes the VW Tuareg HyMotion, Daimler FCELL,  Honda FCX Clarity and Toyota FCHV adv and Opel  HydroGen4, who is bringing 10 FCEV to the fair.
