100% renewable targets will require power storage to manage flows on the net

September 24, 2018: the ENTSO-E , the European TSO community,  invited the EU Commission,  EU s Council and EU Parliament to discus the status of EU’s new Network Codes and Guidelines. Klaus Dieter Bochardt mentioend the crucial role of Network Codes and Guidelines in the Energy Transition: the discussion between the Council and EU Parliament on the format of the regulation (Delegated or Implementing Act) risks to derail the process all together. Benedikt Ennser of the Austrian Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism indicated that 25 Member States plus Iceland and Switzerland signed the declaration. Two regions of Upper Austria and Zuid Holland (NL) sigend as well.

September 25, 2018  Zuid Holland presented its Hydrogen ambition to Dutch stakeholders: Roadmap will be ready Q1 2019. The Dutch government Climate deal that is awaiting government action includes the Dutch mobility vision:

  • less transport
  • battery and fuel cell powered cars
  • biofuels where electrification is not an option

This ambition translates into all new buses zero emission in 2025  and in 2030 all 5000 Dutch buses: To date  8 and 14 in 2019 and by 2020 50 including green hydrogen powered.  The Dutch H2 POlatform calcultated that 500.000 FCEV in NL is a feasible target .

Zuid Holland 3.7 mln public transprot highest in NL 5%. Connexion is one of the three concesion owners: battery electric radius is only 80Km in practice. Maritime is new target for Zuid Holland: 37 ships are being monitored regarding fuel comsumption and emissions (CLINCH project). Expertise and Innovation Centre Internal Waterways (ECB): in 2050 emission maritime emission free. Prominent project and EU Network EIBIP has analyzed emissions of different fuels: for example the average costs of inland waterway transport is 21€cts per kW. Could hydrogen compete and when? LNG has not lived up to expectations. Dutch government set up a support programme  (www.eicb.nl/idb). MARIN , MAritime Research Institute Netherlands will set up Zero Emission Lab by 2021 Wageningen for system integration. Lovers Fuel Cell Boat in Amsterdam from 2011 with Nedstack cells will be continued and new PEMFC will be build like a mobile power support unit.

September 26, 2018: NEL ASA opened the first hydrogen refueling station production location in Europe. The facility has an annual name-plate production capacity of up to 300 units per year of the Nel H2Station®, the most compact hydrogen station currently on the market. With serial production according to lean principles, the large-scale manufacturing plant represents significant improvements in existing production efficiency. The factory also allows for both CE and UL-certified stations to be manufactured on the same production line, providing assurance of product safety and more cost-effective deployment of hydrogen fueling.

September 27, 2018:  the kick off of the ENABLEH2 a research project co-financed by the Horizon 2020 in which EHA is a partner and that is coordinated by Cranfield University took place at Cranfield airfield in the UK. ENABLEH2 seeks to demonstrate that Liquide Hydrogen, LH2, offers a viable route for long-term sustainability of civil aviation with unrivalled environmental benefits, over the complete life cycle, relative to carbon-based fuels.  LH” use was demonstrated on the experimental Tupolev Tu-155 aircraft already in 1988.  Since the EU FP5 project Cryoplane (2000-2002) research and development related to LH2 for civil aviation has not ramped-up. A major reason was that the costs associated with LH2 introduction have dampened enthusiasm. Cryoplane sought to identify the principal technical issues to be addressed before hydrogen could be used as aviation fuel. However market and regulatory changes were not fully addressed.  In October 2016, ICAO adopted a global market-based measure (CORSIA, [6]), which will become operational in 2021. Thus, the time is about right to increase research activities on H2 again, which can already be seen, e.g. in the increasing activity for using H2 in fuel cells in aviation.
