EU Public Consultation: The external dimension of the EU energy policy

Consultation Period: 21/12/2010 to 21/02/2011 The aims of the EU energy policy, as set in Article 194 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, are to ensure the functioning of the energy market, to ensure security of energy supply in the Union, to promote energy efficiency and energy saving and the development of new and renewable forms of energy, and to promote the interconnection of energy networks. These aims have to be pursued in a spirit of solidarity among Member States. None of them can successfully be met without taking into account major evolutions on the energy scene beyond the EU borders. The external dimension therefore needs to be a full part in the recent and forthcoming initiatives in the energy field. This will require a coordinated, efficient and prioritised external energy policy. For this reason the Communication “Energy 2020 – A strategy for competitive, sustainable and secure energy” recognised the need to strengthen the external dimension of the EU energy policy as one of the key priorities in the coming years. The objective of the consultation is to seek interested parties’ views on possible priorities and possible new initiatives in the field of external energy policy. Source:EU [...]

Detroit 2011: Mercedes-Benz To Drive Hydrogen-Powered B-Class Around The World

Mercedes-Benz clearly believes in the long-range viability of hydrogen technology. The company announced plans to drive its F-Cell hydrogen vehicle—based on the European B-Classs—around the world in some 125 days. (Phileas Fogg has nothing to fear from the impish M-B, it seems.) With short refilling times, a 240 mile driving range (based on the Euro cycle), and emissions-free motoring, Mercedes believes that the F-Cell is well suited to both long-range travel, and everyday driving needs. But wait, you might very well ask, how will the F-Cell team source exotic hydrogen when traversing the wilds of Russia, China, or even wide-open Australia? Surely the worldwide hydrogen grid isn’t so complete at this early stage, right? Well, yes. The F-Cell will rely on a handy tanker truck full of hydrogen for, “remote routes.” Don’t expect a hydrogen car in your driveway next year then, we’d guess. Scroll down to read the full Mercedes-Benz press release. Around the world in 125 days – Mercedes-Benz takes off on the first circumnavigation of the world with fuel cell- powered electric vehicles Detroit – At the end of January Mercedes-Benz will kick-off an unparalleled long-distance journey – the F-CELL World Drive. Detroit Auto Show 2011: Toyota Promises ‘Affordable’ Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Vehicle

Toyota announced at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday January 10, 2011 that it plans to begin public sales of an “affordable,” highly fuel-efficient hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle in the United States by 2015 – or sooner, if refueling infrastructure becomes available. “We plan to come to market in 2015, or earlier, with a vehicle that will be reliable and durable, with exceptional fuel economy and zero emissions, at an affordable price,” said Irv Miller, Toyota North America spokesman, at a press conference at the North American International Auto Show. Toyota’s development of a fuel-cell vehicle has outpaced the means to refuel it, Mr. Miller added, “and building an extensive hydrogen refueling infrastructure is the critical next step.” Toyota previously announced plans, with the California Fuel Cell Partnership, to develop a network of at least 46 public refueling stations in four southern California communities in hopes of forming the nucleus of a refueling infrastructure. American Honda is also a partner in the program. Since 2008, its FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle has been available in limited numbers for lease in the Los Angeles area, where about 16 refueling stations operate. Toyota also announced Monday that it is starting a pilot program in [...]
