Hydrogen corridor planned in Scotland

September 16, 2009

The ‘Scotland’s Hydrogen Future’, which includes  a newly unveiled plan for a ‘hydrogen corridor’ from Aberdeen to Inverness has been discussed during the conference on ‘Building a Sustainable Economy through Hydrogen and Renewable Energy ‘organized by the Moray-based United Nations Training Centre, the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, and the Royal Mail. “The prospect of a ‘Hydrogen Corridor’ between Aberdeen and Inverness is an exciting first for Scotland and the UK. The creation of an infrastructure to refuel road vehicles with hydrogen means that there will be a realistic alternative to petrol and diesel. “I am pleased that the Royal Mail Group is a strong supporter of this project and that the UN Training Centre in Moray is playing such a positive role in developing leading global standards here in Scotland.” said Moray MP and Westminster SNP Group Leader Angus Robertson during the conference. The ‘Scottish Hydrogen Corridor’ is expected to run along a 150-mile stretch of road from Aberdeen to Inverness, via Findhorn in Moray. This highway will employ a diversity of renewable energy solutions in different locations with hydrogen refueling stations placed at strategic locations along the route to service a range of users including public transport [...]

Barroso focuses on the decarbonization of transport for the next years

September 15, 2009

As the architecture of the new Commission is expected to be established at the end of October, this next Commission will have to translate tougher climate commitments into policies. This was what Commission President José Manuel Barroso emphasized when he detailed his priorities for the next five years to the European Parliament. Thus, he said that the next EU executive should concentrate on designing a favourable regulatory environment to foster the uptake of low-carbon technologies by European businesses. Mr Barroso, who has confirmed his intention to create a new post of climate commissioner, explained in its political guidelines for the next Commission that “We need to start working now on a radical pathway to reaching a far more sustainable Europe by 2020 (…) this means finding ways to transform our energy supply in a well regulated EU internal market, to use our energy much more efficiently, to recognise the true cost of carbon emissions.  Technology is critical to this, and we must do more to exploit the potential of research and development on a European scale”. “The next Commission needs to maintain the momentum towards a low emission economy, and in particular towards decarbonising our electricity supply and the transport sector – all transport, including maritime [...]

Major automakers and leading H2 infrastructure companies sign MoU

September 10, 2009

Two major agreements were presented within 24 hours that will mark a significant step forward in the market roll out of hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles in Europe: Toyota, Hyundai, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Co. and Honda have signed a Letter of Understanding regarding the development of fuel cell light duty vehicles and the necessary accompanying hydrogen infrastructure.  A day later the  world’s leading industrial companies signed a MoU in Berlin with the participation of the German Minister of Transport, Wolfgang Tiefensee on the  set-up of a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany so as to promote serial production of electric vehicles with fuel cells. The partners of the initiative “H2 Mobility” are Linde, Daimler, EnBW, OMV, Shell, Total, Vattenfall and the NOW GmbH National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The signing automobile manufacturers strongly anticipate that from 2015 onwards, a “quite significant” number—a “few hundred thousand units” over the initial products’ lifecycles—of fuel cell electric vehicles could be commercialized. These companies have built up extensive expertise in fuel cell technology; the signing marks a major industry step towards the serial production of such locally emission-free vehicles. In order to ensure a successful market introduction of fuel-cell vehicles, [...]

Top Ten Reasons to Join the EHA

September 7, 2009

1. The EHA promotes hydrogen as an important energy carrier in a low carbon economy: Hydrogen is widely recognized as a clean and enabling energy carrier in developing a fossil fuel clean energy and transport system and to reduce drastically local emissions. Hydrogen as an energy storage medium should become and integral part of EU’s future smart grids to balance intermittent energy sources. In order to accelerate the commercial market for hydrogen applications, the EHA is informing a broad range of key decision makers, as well as the general public to ensure that the use of hydrogen is integrated in EU policy and regulatory frameworks. 2. EHA has become a point of reference for EU, national and local decision makers: In 2000 five national hydrogen organisations established the European Hydrogen Association (EHA) to promote the use of hydrogen as an energy vector in Europe. In 2004 major European industries active in the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies joined the EHA and enforced this effort to create a commercial market for stationary and transport applications and a role as market leader for European industries. In 2005 the EHA opened its office in Brussels and has become in a relatively [...]

Minutes for European Parliament sessions (31 august-3 September)

September 4, 2009

The post-holiday relaunch of the European Parliament was committed to the priorities of Swedish Presidency at the Council of the European Union and the audition of three new commissioners. The topics dominating this week agenda were institutional/power-oriented and concerned climate talks, the EU strategy to United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP 15) and practical questions of the share of renewable energy in electricity consumption. Environment The Swedish Minister for the Environment, Andreas Carlgren, in the ENVI Committee explained the environmental priorities for the Swedish presidency. With a view to the COP 15, they are focused on 4 areas: climate change, energy saving, biodiversity and renewable energy. On climate change; he argued not only for the determination of ambitious targets at the COP 15 but also for the carrying out of these. Thus, the negotiations should focus on the way to put in practice these objectives. He emphasized, then, the need of a stronger relationship with the developing countries, especially with the growing ones, as India. In this framework, he argued that significant funds to help poorer and undeveloped countries should be implemented to establish more environmentally friendly economic plans and that technology transfers should be increased at short [...]
