German Transport Minisiter compliments H2 and FC companies at Hannover Fair

April 20, 2009

The German Transport minsiter Wolfgang Tiefensee visited the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Group Exhibit in Hannover expressing his great admiration for the accomplishments of the organisations and companies at this year’s fair. He confirmed the German government’s continued commitement to hydrogen and fuel cells as an integral part of future. He referred to the three stages that all new technologies seem to have to go through: the phase where everybody is laughing at you; the phase where everybody is critisizing your progress;  the phase in which everybody is telling you that they always knew that your technology was a winner. He feels that hydrogen and fuel cells are in between the second and third phase and that German industry with continued federal support should become the market leader in electric transport including battery and fuel cell powered vehicles. The EHA was present at the fair together with the Spanish AEH2, Italian H2IT and Belgian VSWB, all EHA member associations. Inall 148 exhibitors were counted at this edition. For more information on the fair please visit the Group Exhibit site.

Energy efficiency projects in the European Economic Recovery Package.

April 19, 2009

The Czech EU Presidency and the Parliament’s negotiators endorsed the list of eligible energy projects agreed by EU heads of state and government in March, including initiatives on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS),  offshore wind or the Nabucco gas pipeline, will now also be open to energy-efficiency measures and other renewable energy projects. The revised version allocates €3.98 billion to energy projects designed to stimulate job creation, help the EU out of recession and strengthen the bloc’s energy independence:  €2.35bn for gas and electricity interconnections, €0.565bn for offshore wind and €1.05bn for CCS demonstration plants. The EP Industry Committee decided  on March 31 to demand that that money not committed before September 1 should be redirected to finance energy-efficiency and renewable energy measures, while member states wanted to see any unused funds returned to their budgets.  The final compromise reflects MEPs’ views, as it allows the Commission to propose the use of recovery money that is not committed by the end of 2010 for energy-efficiency and renewables projects. However, the EU executive will only be able to do this if it can show that there are “serious risks in implementing the priority projects”. A progress report in March 2010 will determine whether such risks exist. [...]

EIT publishes Call for first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs)

April 2, 2009

The objective of European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), established last September in Prague  is to be a key driver of sustainable European growth and  competitiveness through the stimulation of top class innovations with a positive  impact on economy and society. As the first major step in developing the operations of the EIT, the priority is the selection by December 2009 of the first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). KICs will be highly integrated, creative partnerships including education, technology, research, business  and entrepreneurship that will produce new innovations and new innovation models and inspire others to emulate them. The KICs will be driving effective “translation” between partners in ideas, technology, culture, and business models, and will create new business for existing industry and for new endeavours. A strong component will be to educate and develop entrepreneurial people and enhance their ability to work across stakeholder boundaries. It is expected that the KICs will have a significant societal impact, not only through their thematic work, but also through the creation of a new culture of innovation in Europe. The first two to three KICs will be chosen in the beginning of 2010. The EIT now invites proposals with a view [...]
